Trim it Out

Got more trim done today. The columns still need materials. The port for the projector needs done too.

Need to spend a bit more time designing the built-ins…I’m starting to think we’re going to need to move some cabinets to get them to work out.

Mo issues

I discovered that the joints weren't muttered. We got some more ants too.

Doors

Got the doors in and the rest of the casing and baseboard in today. The next piece of bad news is that one of the doors swing the wrong way.

Trimming it Out

Sorry I didn’t get this up yesterday. Cabinets are set and trim started to go up.

I’m surprised at the amount of ‘natural variation’ in these boards.

A bit more

Today we had the windows casings completed and were able to order the blinds. Cabinets are out of their boxes for the most part and getting lined up.

Door Disaster and Other Dilemmas

You may have noticed that I’ve not had an update since the 13th. Perhaps I forgot? Perhaps I was so engrossed in enjoying my new living space that I’ haven’t kept this project log up to date? Maybe it’s because nothing has happened? I’ll let you, the astute reader, decide.

Based on a 5 week lead time (which we covered in a previous installation as being a total shock) we should have had doors delivered on the 15th. They were scheduled then on the 19th or 20th. Finally they are setup for delivery today on the 23rd…but wait…turns out they are all completely too small and won’t fit. Some how they were made, cased, pre-hung, and finished without anyone noticing! Solution – get some filler doors in so that the project can proceed and then figure out how to make adjustments to them once they arrive in another 4 weeks (but based on past performance I’m hoping to have them in place prior to Christmas carols being played on the radio again).

Please notice the lack of pictures I have provided as there are no freakn’ doors.

So the bit of good news is that the cabinets came in as scheduled. They were delivered with the rest of the trim today. The one we’ve seen appears to be the color and style we wanted.

Upon checking out the rest of the materials it’s discovered that the fluted boards to cover our columns are a full 8 feet long. That’s right the columns under the bulkhead as the columns encase poles which hold up the beam holding up our house. Solution – get new boards made ETA TBD.

Next is time for the trim work to begin. Kinda funny that there are about a dozen 4x8 sheets of oak sitting in my garage. Sure there are a few built ins but what? Thankfully Jodi discovered the scheme to cover the entire inside of the theater area in wood and columns. Sorry, I dig that grey color and am not that into wood for my potentially some day home theater (maybe).

So the trim carpenter does get a few hours of work in. I’m no rocket scientist but it does appear that the stair stringer and stair light (both speced to be identical to the ones for the stairs leading to the second level) have a significant amount of interference.

Yea home improvement projects….and I’m thinking of drilling a hole through the exterior of my home tomorrow for install a faucet.

One more fun picture. We decided to start an ant colony in our garage.

Ceiling

The ceiling is painted. A bit of touch up is required on the walls due to masking. Doors deliver in a week and cabinets the following week.

Electrical

With the walls being finished I took the opportunity to install my portion of the ‘electrical’…most of it low voltage.

Theater area. One plate is for surround speakers (I believe my labeler is buried right now). One plate is for outdoor speakers. I haven’t upgraded my receiver for 5 years which in electronics world is a long time. Now to my credit, I did look at them a few years back but basically there were no must have improvements made. I took another gander recently and it turns out there are a few key must haves now mow importantly an Ethernet port. This connectivity adds a few key functions….you can access any media on your library or off the internet (yea for Pandora). It also allows you to be able to control your receiver from you iPhone or iPad (Sonos beware). This is a long way of explaining that I should be able to grill on my porch and play music using the amp and sources available in the theater room.

The third plate contains a mother load of goodies. HDMI to the projector, two Ethernet ports (receiver, potentially new Blu-ray player or PlayStation, satellite receiver, and potentially Sonos all require or benefit from connectivity), a coax terminal, and a terminal for signal to the Butt Kickers.

This fancy device is an IR light dimmer. The lights in the theater area will be remote controlled so with the touch of a button we could turn everything on, dim the lights, and start watching whatever. Ok, that sounds great but in reality it’s so I won’t have to get up off my bum to turn lights on and off. See it in action here http://youtu.be/aMkrRnh7olI

Combo Ethernet/ coax. This one is in the drum room (hello eJamming).

Color!!

Things are starting to shape up.

IMG_2479

I think this room will benefit from some trim, carpet and drums!

IMG_2480

We’ll go ahead and cover most this color with a screen.

IMG_2482

Nice color…not sure it’s overly motivational for exercise.

IMG_2484

I like this one a lot.

Primed

Today the primer was applied. I’m excited that this is the last step of the ‘behind the scenes’ work. From here on out we should be seeing what the finished product will look like. Our paint colors are selected and they should get coat 1 tomorrow. Things are looking brighter now!

About half way

By my estimate we should be at about the half way point in this project.
